Independent filmmakers depend on our network of friends and like-minded people who help us move our projects along to the finish line. Whether in film, books, music, etc., you are a major factor in what we do. So, I’m asking for help one more, and final, time regarding the finishing funds for “The Sandoval 64.”

New Offering for donation to Film Finishing Funds

How many of you remember the late actress Kim Hunter? She won an Oscar and Golden Globe in 1952 for Best Supporting Actress as Stella in “A Streetcar Named Desire.” You may also remember her as Dr. Zira in the 1960/70′s films, “Planet of The Apes” and as Betty Harty in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997).”

Thanks to a good friend, Tom Donelan, whose family were friends with Kim Hunter and her husband Bob Emmett, I have a copy of a hand-written and signed recipe from Kim H. to his mother. It’s a recipe Kim H. received from Mme. Renoir, wife of well-known french director, Jean Renoir. The recipe, a family favorite for Tom, and a new favorite of mine, is for Chicken Saute in Butter. (everything is better in butter!)

We have raised a total of $1800 of the $5000 needed to complete “The Sandoval 64.” We need your help to complete this film. We hope to raise the needed funds by July 25th, and complete the final edit by August 15th so we can submit to a nimber of the fall film festivals, including the Southwest Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in Albuquerque. “The Sandoval 64″ is a moving documentary on the marriage equality issue as it has occurred in New Mexico when 64 gay and lesbian couples were married on Feb. 20, 2004. It includes updates on the issue in New Mexico, and includes music by Holly Near and Sister Funk. Marriage equality will remain an issue until this right is achieved.

Introducing Mary and Norma. They were first in line on Feb. 20, 2004 to receive a marriage license at the Sandoval County Courthouse in Bernalillo, New Mexico. They are one of the couples featured in “The Sandoval 64.”

Jeff and Gordon were too far back in the line, waiting to get a marriage license, when the doors closed to marriage equality in New Mexico.

Jiivanii and Martha were the last couple to receive a license (although serveral couples were able to register their license after a brief ceremony on the courthouse lawn). Also appearing in this clip is their daughter Jennifer.

The Sandoval 64 Coming Soon!

“The Sandoval 64″ is a documentary project in the final stages of post-production. We hope to premiere the film in Albuquerque in early fall, 2011. A trailer for the film is in the works and will be posted soon.

Mary & Norma - first couple to request a license

“The Sandoval 64″ chronicles the marriage equality issue as it has occurred in New Mexico, featuring interviews from gay and lesbian couples who received marriage licenses on February 20, 2004, and those who tried to get licenses that day but were too far back in the line when the window closed. The film also covers the political maneuvering that has occurred in the New Mexico state legislature since 2004, until the most recent attempts to nullify equality in the 2011 legislative session.

For all intent and purporses, the 64 marriage licenses granted that day are still legal, and have not been contested in a court of law, nor has the state legislature passed any legislation rescinding those licenses.

Interview with Linda Andersson, Filmmaker

Linda Andersson is a writer/director/producer originally from Florida and now living in Los Angeles. She began her screenwriting career several years ago, in Florida, when she realized that she was more interested in bringing her characters to life, rather than keeping them trapped between the pages of books. After she became a finalist in several TV writing contests, she decided to take it to the next level and began directing and producing several short films, with all of them making the rounds on the film festival circuit.

In 2007, Andersson packed up her life and made the big move from Florida to Los Angeles where she began working with actress, Deborah Stewart, and within months of Linda’s move, they produced the TV pilot, “The Seer.”

Linda’s screenwriting efforts were rewarded during late 2008 when she sold her first feature length screenplay, “Pyramid Scheme,” which is currently in post-production. Andersson is now
in production of “InSight” a webseries based on “The Seer.”

Here is a short interview with Linda, discussing her projects and film fund-raising efforts:

Nina: You’ve actually made a number of short films so far. Can you name a few for us?

Linda: Sure. As writer/producer we have “Moving Out!” And as writer/director I’ve made “Misconception,” “Mood Swing,” “Torn,” “The Seer” pilot, “When The Time’s Right,” “The 6 Month Rule,” and the web series “InSight.”

Nina: What current projects are you working on?

Linda: Right now I’m working on a novel based on “The Seer/InSight” film project. In the future, I hope to fund a vampire film, and the feature “The Rise of The Seer.”

Nina: What have been the biggest stumbling blocks for you in making your films?

Linda: The only stumbling block on the large scale is funding. On a small scale, in Los Angeles it’s finding locations that aren’t way over-priced because of the studio system… Since I’m not an actor, SAG does not work for me, so having to work within their rules can be challenging. But, it is nice to have really good actors to work with, so…

Nina: What are you doing now to finance your projects?

Linda: We are trying to go thru personal/professional networking. Online fundraising is too time consuming for the amount of funds raised, I think.

Mango Salsa recipe

Hello all,
This recipe will be in my upcoming cookbook, REEL FOOD FROM REEL WOMEN (which will be available on Amazon.com). Thought I’d share it with you now as it is great for holiday get-togethers. Happy Holidays!

Mango Salsa

Ingredients:
2 Mangoes – peeled and chopped in small chunks
1 medium to large avocado – chopped in small chunks
1 ½ tbsp. cilantro
1 sm. can (4 oz.) chopped green chile
1 cup chopped tomato
1 cup chopped green onions
2 tbsp. lime juice
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 pinch of salt
Optional ingredients:
1-2 tbsp. tequila
½ – 1 tbsp. chopped jalapeno (more or less according to taste)

Instructions:
Simply mix all ingredients together in a medium-sized bowl.

Refrigerate one hour before serving.

Note: This salsa is wonderful with chips, or as an accent for fish such as tilapia.
