I’m old enough to remember when Julia Child first went on air in the 1960′s with her show “The French Chef.” I remember thinking what an interesting woman! With her pounding meat into submission,or her flair for making cooking high cuisine look easy,it was a favorite show. I may not be much of a cook myself, but it was fun to watch her.
A few days ago I went to see the new Nora Ephron film,“Julie &Julia.” Nora Ephron has been the screenwriter and/or director of films such as “Sleepless in Seattle,”“You’ve Got Mail,””When Harry Met Sally,”“Silkwood,”“Michael,”and many others. The film stars the wonderful Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. Both actresses were also in the award-winning film “Doubt.”
I found Meryl Streep’s performance to be awe-inspiring. The vocal inflections, mannerisms, etc.,that she captured of the larger than life Julia Child really impressed me. And Amy Adams as the young New York woman looking for some kind of “spark”in her life was very compelling. The movie combines attributes of Julia Child’s memoir,“My Life in France”that was co-written with her grandnephew, and Julie Powell’s book,“Julie &Julia:My Year of Cooking Dangerously.” I think Ms. Ephron did an incredible job of combining attributes of both books into a compelling film.
On a lighter note, don’t go to the movie hungry. You’ll be STARVING by the end of the film. Boeuf bourguingnon, crusty baguettes (I love bread),oysters,…Oh,I could go on and on. After the movie ended,my friends and I immediately went out to have dinner.
“Julie &Julia”runs about 120 minutes and is worth every second.
